WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The last meeting of the Mangaweka Institute’s financial year was held on Tuesday. Several visitors were welcomed. It was decided to hold the annual picnic on the first Saturday after school resumes. A letter of congratulation is to be sent to Miss Spencer. The motto for the month, “Actions Speak Louder than Words,” was given by Miss T. Crawford. A poem read by Mrs Trains was enjoyed, also a dance by our newest member, Miss Gwen Reid. Members are reminded that nominations for the new committee close on February 'l6. A demonstration was given by Mrs Bielski, of Rangiwahla, on black and white pastel work. Mrs Guthrie gave an interesting talk on Women’s Institute affairs. Hostesses were Mesdames C. and H. Reilly, Guthrie. Waugh, and Miss Sweet. Competition winners: Dahlias: Mrs Pairman 1, Mrs Oulsman 2, Mrs Pairman 3, Mrs E. Loye 4. Date and Nut Loaf: Mrs R. Dickson 1, Mrs W. H. Billinghurst 2, Miss I. Dickson 3. CROQUET A challenge was issued by the Marton Club to Mangaweka for the Simpson Cup. A team of players from Marton journeyed to Mangaweka on Friday and after the day’s play, Mangaweka still retains the cup. Following are the results of the games:— Mesdames L. Bailey and F. Jarrett beat Mesdames Williams and Thompson, 26-0. Mesdames D. Watkins and A. Bailey beat Mesdames True and Mclndoe, 26-21. Mesdames L. Bailey and F. Jarrett beat Mesdames Williams and Thompson. 26-3. Mesdames D. Watkins and A. Bailey lost to Mesdames True and Mclndoe, 26-20. W.D.F.U. A meeting of the W.D.F.U. was held on Thursday and there was a very good attendance, Mrs A. Pearce presiding. New members were welcomed, also visitors from Ohingaiti. It was decided to hold a street stall on February 18, Mesdames Gorringe donating c. dressed doll; Mrs Mackay Turnbull. box of chocolates, and Mrs A. Pearce a cake for the funds. Delegates were appointed to attend the quarterly t meeting of the Wellington Central Provincial Council held at Taihape this month. Competition next month to be the best posy of flowers. The competition on Thursday for the best limerick on the W.D.F.U. was won by Mrs J. Bonnor.
