WAR DENOUNCED

CHURCH ASSEMBLY VIEW

RE-ARMAMENT DEPLORED [ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY, Feb. 6. The Church Assembly, after a twodays’ debate, passed a resolution which affirms that war, as a method of settling international disputes, Is incompatible with the teaching of Christ. The Assembly deplores rearmament throughout the world and calls on Christians to redouble their efforts to promote international goodwill, and assure the British Government of the Church’s moral support in all efforts to remove political and economic cause of war. While welcoming the declared policy of the Government of adhering to the League covenant, using armed force only for defence of the country and in the interests of international security and peace, the resolution goes on to recognise the right of the Government to maintain such forces as the Imperial Parliament deems necessary for the pursuance of this declared policy, and states the belief that so long as this policy is maintained Christian citizens may bear arms in service of their country, while also affirming the responsibility of Christians to support, criticise, or oppose all defence programmes in the light of Christian principles and in relation to the advancement of the Kingdom of God. POPE GIVFS ADDRESS AN URGE TO PEACE DIFFICULT TASK FOR SICK MAN VATICAN CITY, Feb. 7. The Pope, speaking in Latin, which was afterwards translated into English and other languages, broadcast a peace address to the closing session of the Eucharistic Congress at Manila. His Holiness spoke into a micronhone in front of his wheelchair. He urged the world to follow Christ... The Pope began in strong tones, but soon lost the text for a moment. Then he gave the impression of being tired, but occasionally he raised his voice as though making an effort to reach the end of a phrase. He finished on a high-pitched tone, and his voice broke as he gave the Benediction.
