SPIRAL’S CUP

HUGE CROWD AT AWAPUNI PAPER SLIPPER’S SPRINT MANAWATU MEETING OPENS (Special Reporter.) The Awapuni course was crowded on Saturday for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting. Indeed, it was such a huge attendance as that registered at the autumn meeting of 1918, when Desert Gold and Biplane were to have met in the Awapuni Cup. The congestion at the entrances to the car-parking areas was early noticeable, and latecomers experienced a lengthy holdup. After the last race many patrons found that from half an hour to an hour was required in covering the distance from the course to Palmerston North, but in spue of this the traffic was well controlled. The weather early in tne day was dull after the mornings rain, but later the sky cleared and bright sunshine prevailed. The track was a little dead, but the going was good. The Governor-General, Lora Galway, and party attended the races, arriving just alter the first event and remaining till after the seventh. The totalisator turnover naturally showed a substantial increase over last year's figures, £38,143 IDs being handled, as compared with £25,227 on Boxing Day last year, the increase thus being £12,916 10s, or approximately 50 per cent. IT similar increases are registered to-day and tomorrow the aggregate should be well over £BO,OOO. The stipendiary steward reported that Screamer had caused interference in the Nursery Handicap byrunning in just after the start, Sigurd and Whakao being the chief sufferers, but the explanation was accepted as satisfactory. It was also reported that, as a result of interference with Mata Hari by Land Tax and with Laughing Lass by Paper Slipper in the Fitzherberi Handicap, an inquiry was opened and partly heard, but adjourned till to-day. Spiral scored a meritorious win in the Manawatu Cup, maintaining a long-sustained run to defeat Tiger Gain and One Whetu. The favourites, Dungarvan and Lowenberg, did not have uninterrupted passages in a race marked by a slow-run first half. Paper Slipper showed his class by winning the Fitzherbert Handicap convincingly from Invoice and Laughing Lass. The latter had a shockingly bad passage, and was nearly last three furlongs from home, nut was simply flying at the finish. A feature of the day's results was the “hat trick’’ performed by A. Jenkins, who rode the first three winners—The Bigot, Charade and The Buzzer. The Bigot Proves Best. The Bigot was better backed than Day Dress in the Maiden Race, and again proved the truth ol the adage, xhe bigger the field, the bigger tne certainty.' Sea Wrack and Puroto were squeezed out at the start, Jazz Boy, Tne Bigot, Old Surrey, Reserve Banx, Lustra and Trimden being the eany leaders. At the half-mile the leading trio were well clear of Tractile, Reserve Bank, and Glenthawn, and thus they turned for home. Over the final stages The Bigot produced an extra effort to get the verdict by a short lead over Old Surrey, with Jazz Boy jnly a long head away. Glenthawn •vas fourth, a length back, ana then .ame Golaen Entei prise, Trimaen, I austral and Sea WracK. Another Favourite. viiaiduc, mvourite in a good bet- ■ .ing race lor the 4’okomaru Highweight, got up in the last stride to snatch a narrow victory. Vonia Parx. led cnuiaue and Windward out or the straight, and then Silent Acre ran up to follow Vonia Park into the bacx stretch, witn .nree lengths separating them, Windward ana Cnarade being nearest o* .he oiners. turning lor nome Vonia Park was still wen clear ot biiem Acre and Cnarade, but tne last-numeu commenced a sustained run which enabled him to win oy a nose from Winaward, with Voiua Park only a short neck back. There was a gap Oi ive lengths to Silent Acre ana Irevelyn Hold. ihe Buzzer Finishes Fast. Terry, Free Gold and The Buzzei were backed in that order for tne Tararua Handicap, in whicn Tne Buzzer limsneu last to beat me favourite. Going out of the straight Cloudy j Bay, rrce Gold, Pango, Hamarin, Tne j Buzzer and Rn Vidette were racing in that order, and thus they ran into the back stretch. Hamarin moved up las*, to take the lead at tne hali-mne, being followed across the lop by ciuuuy Bay, f ree Gold, Pango, xm Viaeitu. Terry and The Buzzer, Turning for home Hamarin still had a lean ot three lengths but compounded, Terry taking the lead at the distance, oniy to go under to The Buzzer's final challenge. The Buzzer won oy han a length, and Hamarin was two j two lengths behind Terry. Pango was fourth ana Free Gold and tn Vidette next to finish. Spiral’s Sustained Kun. Dungarvan, Lowenberg and Tiget Gain were heavily backed in tne Manawatu Cup, but Spiral eventually 1 won after a long-susiained run from 1 the half-mile. ] Limbohm and Rona Bay were slow ' to move and Tiger Gain, Round Score ' and Hunting Queen led Dungarvan 1 and Aussie Ra to the straight the first time. Passing the stands Tiger Gain was clear of Round Score and Rona Bay had run up to third berth, ■ with Hunting Queen, Dungarvan, Tout le Monde, Aussie Ra, Limbohm, Spiral, Lowenberg, One Whetu and c Padishah following well bunched, the pace being very slow. Tiger Gain 5 was joined by Rona Bay running into the back stretch, and Hunting Queen also moved up, the order being little 2 changed down to the half-mile, where I Spiral commenced a run on the outer. F

On the home turn Tiger Gain still led Rona Bay, Round Score, Tout le Monde, Hunting Queen and Dungarvan, but Spiral appeared on the outside once they had straightened up. Tiger Gain was still the leader at the halt-distance, but Spiral was finishing fast and came on to win by a long neck from Tiger Gain. Two lengths back was the fast-finishing One Whetu, just ahead of Lowenberg, who did not have the best of runs. Hunting Queen was next, and was followed by Tout le Monde, Round Score and Dungarvan. Winner from Riccarton. Lazybones was more than twice as well backed as anything else in the Nursery Handicap, but the winner turned up in the Chief Ruler—Drama filly, Allspice, trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson. Laughing Chief and Allspice showed out first from Gay Molly and Mother-in-Law, but Allspice was soon taken into the lead ana piloted Laughing Chief, Gay Molly, Mother-in-Law, Scarf Dance and Screamer into the straight. In the run to the judge, Allspice did " best to win by half a length from Laughing Chief, with Mother-in-Law a length and a-quar-ter back, ahead of Gay Molly and Scarf Dance. After a gap came

Screamer, Sigurd and Lazybones. Huntette Beats Ned Cuttie. Ned Cuttie carried 185 more than Finnesko in the Gillies Handicap, but the pair were defeated by Huntette. Getting away smartly Huntette led Finnesko and Going Gay over the initial stages, and wnen they had settled down Huntette was followed by Going Gay, Thermidor, Finnesko, and Calshot across the top. It was not till the judge was sighted that Ned Cuttie came on the scene, but he failed by a long necK to catch Huntette, with Finnesko, stopping badly, half a length back. Thermidor was fourth and then came Calshot and Le Touquet. Favourite Scores in Sprint. Paper Slipper was twice as well

backed as Laughing Lass in the Fitzherbert Handicap, out tne pair were separated at the finish by Invoice. Invoice moved out first, but was soon supplanted by Land Tax, who led Invoice, Symcony, Emissary, Mother Superior, Mata Hari, Hunting Lodge and Paper Slipper past the half-mile. Crossing the top Emissary took the lead from Symcony, Land Tax, Invoice, Paper Slipper, Alby and Mother Superior, with Laughing Lass still last but one. Thus they rounded the turn, but at the distance Paper Slipper came through to win by a length from Invoice. Three-quarters of a length away was the last-finish-ing Laughing Lass, just ahead of Mother Superior. Emissary and Dollar Bill were next, followed by Mata Hari. Arctic King Takes the Last. Entail was favourite for the concluding event, but was never dangerous, Arctic King winning from Orac. Orac led out of the straight from Hunting Mars, Ingenuity, Passion Flower, Boomerang, Arctic King, and Entail, but running into the back Orac ran away for a four lengths’ lead from Hunting Mars, Ingenuity. Passion Flower, Boomerang, with a gap back to the others in a strungout field. Ingenuity ran up to Orac half a mile from home and they came

round the turn ahead of Hunting Mars and Boomerang, but Arctic King finished fast to win by two lengths from Orac, with Geitel a head away and Passion Flower fourth. Then came Hunting Mars, Ingenuity, Boomerang and Entail in that order Details of results:— MAIDEN PLATE. (Of £120; six furlongs.) •I—The Bigot (Mr F. F.
