WEROHIA WINS

BIG RACE AT WOODVILLE MATA HARI TAKES SPRINT “TOTE" TOTAL DOUBLE (Special Reporter.) A fine day with the bright sunshine tempered by a cool breeze made conditions ideal on Saturday for the concluding day of the Woodville District Jockey Club’s summer meeting. The Saturdav holiday enabled the club's "gate” to show a substantial increase, the attendance being very large. The totalisator turnover was nearly three time' that of the corresponding day last year, the amount handled on the day being £11,240, compared with £4866 10s, and the total for the meeting was £20.611, as against £8757 last year, the increase over last year be.ng i 11,240. u , The principal event, the Gotnaru Memorial, was won comfortably by the favourite. Werohia, and Mata Hari beat Karl by a narrow margin in the open sprint. It was a day or close finishes, save for Geira’s five lengths’ margin in the juvenile race. Lord Hereford’s Hurdles. The finish in the hurdles was a good one and Lord Hereford, hardridden, held Red Rufus to win by a neck. Tahoma and Lord Hereford were together in front for most of the way, with Tahoma outjumping his stablemate. Passing the stands they were followed by Red Rufus and Rioghail and Contract was next. Blue Tiger moved up into fifth place at the far turn. The order was maintained into the straight and Lord Hereford, Tahoma, Red Rufus and Rioghail were almost in line at the last fence. Once over Red Rufus issued a brilliant challenge but his run finished just short of the post and Lord Hereford won by a neck. Tahoma was a length and a-half away and Rioghail, followed by Blue Tiger, was fourth. Rotoma beats Favourite. The Bigot, the half-brother to Young Crusader, and Rotoma were the favourites for the Novice Stakes, and returned the dividends. Hunting Spy was squeezed out at the start. They had not gone more than a furlong when Rotoma had charge and she led across the top and into the straight, with Diamond Cutter in close attendance, then The Bigot and Earl Colossus, Count Siegfried and Appendage. Rotoma drew out at the distance but The Bigot issued a late challenge and with a nice run got to within a neck of Rotoma at the post. Diamond Cutter was third, four lengths away, and First Spec was fourth, followed by Count Siegfried, Earl Colossus and The Pawnbroker. Werohia Comfortably. An Auckland Cup candidate. Werohia, was favourite for the Gothard Handicap and he did not give his backers much to worry about. The tapes were broken several times, and when they got away Red Manfred took up the role of pacemaker to be followed out of the straight by Hunting Mars, Werohia. Jubilee Song, Tout le Monde and Blue Garter. Sanguine King moved up from the back at the live and the order across the top and into the straight was Red Manfred. Werohia, Hunting Mars, Sanguine King. Tout le Monde and Jubilee Song. In the run to the judge Red Manfred went on with it hut could not withstand the finishing run of Werohia, who was in front inside the distance and won by just under a length. Sanguine King was third, three lengths away, and Blue Garter was fourth, followed by Full Throttle, Hunting Mars and Tout le Monde. Never Off the Bit. Geira’s weight was raised from 7.12 to 8.11, but she repeated her first day’s effort by winning the juvenile event with effortless ease, never once being off the bit. The order out was Geira, Wild Flower, Hunting Lore. Lady Montana, and Felicitation. The field was soon well strung out and Geira turned for home three lengths ahead oi Wild Flower, with Lady Montana five lengths further back. The issue was never in doubt, Geira winning as she liked from Wild Flower. Feiicitation, who got up to beat Lady Montana for third, was six lengl is further back. Export’s Improvement. Export was second in the Trial 'Handicap or. the first day and he improved, winning the Gmge Handicap by a narrow margin from the littlefancied Taupiri Silver Riv-.: na.l ejrarge r.t Inc Biile and he led into the straigiit with Acron, Taupiri, Export, on Hie or.: eland Le Toqn.*'. following. Silver River was in front at the distance but Taupiri and Export were almost .on terms and in a punishing finish Export got the verdict by half a neck from Taupiri. with Acron half a length further back. Silver River Was fourth, with Black Frost and Le Toquet almost in line. Another Close Finish. Karl. Invoice and Mata Hari was the order in the betting for the open Sprint. Karl and Bodyline were first out from Mata Hari, Porotiti, Invoice and Alby. This order was maintained to the "straight where Mata Hari and Invoice set about the task of catching Karl. Karl was still in front and going well when they were passing the big stand but Mata Hari made a last desperate effort to score by a very narrow margin. Porotiti was close up fourth and Bodyline was next. Mister Quex Scores. Blygain was preferred to Patagonia »nd Mister Quex in the Kiritaki Handicap but Mister Quex got up to beat her in an exciting finish. The rider was announced for Prevail but she was lame and was withdrawn before the betting opened. I Blygain, Mister Quex, Lord Quick tnd Otaki were the early leaders, Recitation and Blue Short getting the worst of the start. Blygain turned for home a couple of lengths ahead of Mister Quex with Otaki, L-ird Quick, Patagonia and Recitat-ir.

Blygain was under pressure at the distance but Mister Quex finished too solidly for her, winning by a short head. Otaki was third, two lengths away, and Patagonia was fourth, followed by Lord Quick.
