WOODVILLE MEETING

NEXT WEEK’S FIXTURE ACCEPTORS FOR THURSDAY. [ Per Press Association. ] WOODVILLE, Dec. 4.

NEW JUVENILE STAR ■ SMOKE SCREEN APPEARS j FORDELL-TRAINED YOUNGSTER Owned by Mr. Russell Grace, ol Wanganui, and trained by D. Marks al Fordell, Smoke Screen created such a favourable impression when he scored first up last Saturday at Feilding that he Is already being hailed as the juvenile find of the season. When it is considered that he will be pitted against Francis Drake, already winner of more juvenile "classics" than any other of his i age, it will be realised that keen ob- | servers must have been very much I impressed by his display. It was in the Feilding Juvenile I Stakes that Smoke Screen made his I first appearance with the colours up, I and as he had done but one decent i gallop, so it is reported, on the ForI dell track, it was considered that he would require a race to be seen at his I best. Thus he was allowed to go out I practically unsupported by his connections, though a few keen observers ! participated in the double-figure dividend which was associated with his success. How he spreadeagled the field, which included two winners in Greenwich and Wildflower, is now history a week old, but it can be taken for granted that, if he improves as he should, for he ran rather greenly, he should invest with new interest such events as the Great Northern Foal Stakes, the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and the Wellington Stakes. Smoke Screen has had more time in which to mature than the early-sea-son eracks, and there could hardly be a better-bred youngster in the land than he is for class. Smoke Screen, who has been gelded is a bay son of Limond and the Thespian—Cowl mare Curtain, three-quar-ter sister to Veil, the dam of Veilmond, to whom therefore the Feilding winner is very closely related. It is, of course, one of the best families the Koatanui Stud has ever had, inferior only to the great Eulogy line, for its descendants number such horses as Beau Soult (sire of Beau lord), Bronze, Farceur, Rational, Lady Desmond, The Maequerader, Mask, The Monk, Habit, etc. At last January sales Smoke Screen was secured by Mr. Russell Grace, owner of View Halloo and Mother Superior for 600 guineas. SON OF THE TETRACH .MAGNUS BREAKS A LEG. According to a southern report, the Irish-bred stallion Magnus, who was imported by Sir Charles Clifford in 1933, broke a leg at the Stonyhurst Stud a few days ago, and he was to have been destroyed. He was a four-teen-year-old horse by The Tetrarch from Princess Dorrie, by Your Majesty (son of Persimmon) from Doris, by Loved One (son of See Saw), and he had just completed his fourth season at the
