BOWLING Patea bowlers had another victory on Saturday by 23 points, against Hawera Park, at Hawera. Mr Chadwick, vice-president of the Park Club, welcomed the visitors, and Mr A. E. Wainwright replied and congratulated the Park members on their magnificent green. Chers were accorded the ladies for the afternoon tea. INSTITUTE Mrs L. Morris presided at. the monthly meeting of the Kakaramea Women’s Institute last week. Mrs Murray, of the Waikato Institute branch, was welcomed as a new member. The president thanked all workers and contributors to the display at the group meeting last month. Opaku Women’s Institute advised on a flower show to be held in their district. The Returned Soldiers' Association sent thanks for goods bought. Christmas tree arrangements were finalised, and Mesdames Hopkins. Lord and Morris appointed a committee. Mrs Dyer demonstrated on raffia and cane work. Winners of the competitions were: Best posy, Mrs McAsey 1 and 3, Mrs Anthony 2. Best dressed doll: Miss A. Fowler 1. Best bloom: Mrs Hodge 1, .Mrs Dyer 2, Mrs Meharry 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Meharry and H. Watt. TENNIS OPENING Georgeous weather and an influxion of players featured the opening day of the Patea Tennis Club on Saturday, over 60 players taking the courts, apart from a number of onlookers. The Yankee touranment was admirably supervised by Mr. F. E. Roberts, assisted by the president (Mr. G. R. Taylor) and Mr. O. Cross (secretary). Winners were Mrs. Brooker with a net. 76, and Mr. McTamney with 74; runners-up were Mrs. F. Nickel 66, and Miss Jackson 68. Mrs. Taylor presented the prizes. Mr. Taylor welcomed the visitors, old players and new members, the largely increased membership angering well for the coming season. He eulogised the work of Mr. Roberts (past president) who had retired from active part in the club, and presented him with a fountain pen from mem-

bers in recognition of his services, and called for three cheers. In replying. Mr. Roberts said all he had done had been a pleasure, and he impressed upon players to always play the game to win, not to buffoon it. The gift he would treasure, and he wished the club future success. The Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, in a neat speech, declared the courts open. A telegram of best wishes was read from Mrs. Joan Shepherd, of Wellington, former secretary. Mrs. W. T. Simmons kindly donated trophies for combined doubles and Mr. O’Reilly trophies for ladies’ doubles. PERSONAL Onlookers at the Patea tennis opening on Saturday included Mrs. Honeyfield snr., Mrs. M. Ballard, Mrs. M. A. Pearce, Miss Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. E. O’Reilly and Mr. E. Harris. Mrs. J. G. Petersen leaves this week on a visit to Wellington.
