WANGANUI HORSE FAIR

Freeman R. Jackson report as follows:—We held our third spring horse lair on Saturday to a good attendance of buyers. The quality in all classes was not up to the standard of recent spring sales, the range of prices not being as high. Nevertheless relative to quality, the realisations were quite satisfactory. The offering of 143 horses of all classes, comprised 53 unbrokens, 34 broken horses and 56 hacks and light harness horses. Unbrokens.—Outside a few heavy horses all were hacks and ponies. What few heavy horses offered sold freely, top price being £4B 10s for a 3yr. draught gelding on account of Mr. Andrew Melville; 2yr. bay colt on account of Mr. lan Higgle £4O and a 4yr. 3 draught gelding on account Mr. Alex Kempton £4O 10s; spring carters £lB to £26. Hacks: Top price £l2, on account James Campion, Hid., Okirae, for a 3yr, filly and a 4yr. gelding; Shetland ponies on account Mrs. W. R. S. Brower £4 5s and £6. Draughts, Half-draughts and Spring Carters (broken).—Nothing very . heavy was offered. Best light draughts all work £43 10s to £47 10s; good heavy half-draughts, all work, £34 10s to £4O 10s; spring carters, £2O to £27 10s; farm horses £lO 1o £lB. Hacks and Light Harness Horses (broken).—Best hacks up to 6yrs, £l6 to £2O; fair hacks, £lO to £l5; hack and harness horses, £l2 to £18; ponies £4 10s to £8; aged hacks £3 to £5; useless and aged. 10s to £2 10s.
