B Years-Ago Scenes to be Seen in Giant telescope
NEW YORK—Thu plans of the 200incli telescope, which will make this world’s largest ‘‘eye-piece” a structure resembling three live-storey buildings titled together like slicks crossed to make a kite, were announced here on It was announced also that the astronomers who "ride” this telescope wilt have a Hying field on lop of Mi. I’alomar in California, so that they can fly to work. The plans were described al a meeting of the American Institute by Capt. C. S. McDowell, L.F.N., who has been lent by the Navy to be supervising engineer of the,erection of the G,OUU,OOO dollar telescope. The 200-inch ‘'eye,” the huge glass mirror which, the telescope will curry, | is already at the California Institute ot Technology at Pasadena being ground. It should be finished in .1940, Captain McDowell said. But the unique new structure which will form the body of the telescope is expected to be fabricated by next July. It is being built by the Westinghouse Company m South Philadelphia, Penna. This telescope, Captain AlcDowell said, will see a billion light years out into space, more Ilian twice the distance now plumbed. When an astronomer sees the object <4 a billian light years away, he is also looking at. a scene that occurred a billion ya i s ago.
