The well-known South Island alpinist, Mr. Peter Graham, who returned by the Strathnaver, declares that the Swiss Alps, in many respects, ftre inferior to the mountains of the South Island of New Zealand. He mountaineered in Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, accompanied by Canon H. E. Newton, Dean of York, who was in charge of a New Zealand West Coast parish from 1900 to 1907.
