CHANGES MADE IN CANADIAN RADIO

NEW MANAGER APPOINTED OTTAWA, Oct. 1. Major W. E. Gladstone Murray, a native of Vancouver, 8.C., graduate’ of McGill University in Montreal, Rhodes scholar for Quebec province in 1913 and for some years public relations officer with the British Broadcasting Corporation, is returning to Canada as general manager of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the dominating figure in Canadian radio. The assistant general manager will be Dr. Augustin Frigon, of Quebec. Major Murray was born in 1893. He was at Oxford when the war broke out, and enlisted August 4, 1914, with King Edward’s Horse. He served until after the armistice, in the latter stages with the Royal Air Force. While engaged with the 8.8. C., Major Murray has been consulted by the Canadian Government in the establishment of the service which now comes under his control, and so he is familiar with the problems of Canadian radio. These appointments by the Government followed changes authorised by Parliament last winter. Under the system now abandoned radio broadcasting was managed by a commission of three members. In the new plan there is a board of governors of nine, serving without salary in an advisory capacity, but the real authority rests with the general manager. Under his jurisdiction come the eight broadcasting stations owned by the Government and the 73 others privately operated. Two other public utilities have come under the new forms of administration. The seven national seaports, operated in the past by seven different government boards, now are managed by one central body. In the Canadian National Railways a board of directors has been substituted for the board of trustees.
