GARDEN PARTY

FOR CITY QUEEN In the beautiful setting of lefy trees In the beautiful setting of leafy trees Home, Alma Road, a successful garden party was held on Saturday afternoon to assist the candidature of the City Queen (Miss Merle Spurdie) in the Health Camp Campaign. The glorious weather made the outing a pleasurable one for the large number of people who attended. Stalls, stocked with produce and cakese were soon emptied by purchasers and nearly every visitor carried a bulging bag o.' paper parcel. The Highland Pipe Band and the Queen Alexandra Band added greatly to the afternoon’s enjoyment with their programmes of music. A number of visitors tried their skill at the various games provided for their entertainment, and there were numerous competitions. Keen interest was taken in the baby show, there being a good number of entries. There were so many bonnie entrants that the judge, Mrs J. C. Wickham, had a difficult task. The awards in the four classes were: Six months’ old. Graham Glengarry and Betty Caudwcll tied for first place. Seven to 12 months, Jennifer Johnston 1, June Flack 3. Thirteen to 18 months. Keith Eaglestone 1. Nineteen months to 2A years, Catherine Knight 1, Heather Gatfield 2. Among those present were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs W. J. Rogers). Miss Swann's pupils had an interested group of spectators as they gave two dances. For the first item the girls were in gossamer frocks of rainbow hue, and colourful Hungarian costumes and high floral head-dresses were worn for the second dance. Afternoon tea was in charge of Mesdames Heath, Meldrum. Hessell, Hackett’ and helpers. The various games and stalls were: Darts and roll downs, managed by Mr Cross and the Y.M.C.A. boys; skittles, Mr C. S. Ryan; “basin in hole,” Mrs Uttley; gipsy tent. Mr:- 3. E. S. Amies: comnetitions, Mts J. B. Cotterill, Mrs Eide, Miss Speagell; cake stall, Mesdames Summerell, B. Bates. Miss Moore: prolv.ee, ice cream, sweets and drinks, Mesdames Harris and Rock el. Competitions resulted as follows: Mirror, J. Little, Bell Street (90); theatre ticket, J. Tayloi, Gonville: cake (variety stall), J. Coull (5); set of polish. R. Spooner. Other competitions will be finalised this week.
