I.ightiiiug during a tropical thunderstorm set fire to the Alilliquin Sugar Company’s large rum distillery at Bundaberg last night and caused damage estimated at nearly £1,000,000. The blaze lit up the whole of East Bundabtlg and residents were unable to approach within 300 yards. Half a million gallons of the finest rum, between 30,000 and 40,000 gallons of methylated spirits, in addition to valuable plant and buildings, were destroyed, but the molasses store ml.jrfcent, which has a capacity of a. million gallons, was saved by a fortunte change of wind. Many terrific explosions eurred. Firemen and scores ol distillery employees worked hours quelling the fire, which was one of the worst in Australian history. Streams of burning rum ami methylated spirits flowed for hours from the inferno into the Burnett River.
