General Situation.—A shallow depression has been crossing southern New Zealand and another one is now centred west of Cape Maria van Diemen. An anti-cyclone covers the greater part of Australia. Forecast.—Winds: Moderate to strong northerly, backing to southerly to-night in the southern half of the South Island and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas (N.Z. waters): Rather rough to rough south of Cape Egmont and in Cook and Foveaux Straits, slight to moderate elsewhere but rising north of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate northerly winds at first in the northern portion, otherwise westerlies prevailing and freshening with rising seas. Weather. —Cloudy to overcast with mist and fog in places and fairly general rain probable. Temperatures cool to warm but becoming cooler during to-morrow.
