HOLIDAY CARNIVAL

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR PROGRAMME FINALISED W IDE VARIETY OF El ENTS This coming Christmas will see the inauguration of an annual carnival for Wanganui, a function which should brighten up the festive season, and prove most successful if accorded the local support which might reasonably be expected. Great credit is due to the Tourist and Development League for its enterprise in initiating such a scheme, and no one can deny that the objects are worthy, viz.: To brighten up our festive season: to help to provide the means of sending our bands to the Dominion bands’ contests; to provide a paddling pool for young children on the Castlecliif beach; to plant and do corate the esplanade at Castlecliff; to help to maintain the boys’ afforestation camp; and to encourage and develop from year to year such other civic improvements as the league may see fit. An excellent committee has been organised, representative of most, if not all, of the sports bodies in the city, to control the carnival arrangements. The enthusiasm and initiative being displayed by this committee should provide an incentive for every citizen to help make the carnival a big success. It might, therefore, be opportune at this moment to review the official programme of events in order that everyone might be able decide in what direction he or she can help, and encourage friends to help—and a careful scrutiny will show that there are many avenues open to a willing public, e.g., in the grand procession, in the children’s floral procession, in the various competitions, >n the carnival fair side-shows, etc., as follows: December 26 (Boxing Day).—Regatta at Sandy Hook, including a full programme of rowing events: New Zealand outboard motors championship.
