LEVIN SUCCESS

RECORD SPRING MEETING RONA BAY WINS HANDICAP AIRING AND LONE RAIDER Attracting patrons from as far north as Wanganui as well as from Wellington and the Manawatu districts, the Levin Racing Club s oneday spring meeting on Saturday drew a record crowd, apparently in excess of expectations for the supply of racebooks was soon exhausted and the totalisator staff had to work at high pressure. It was no mean feat for the staff to handle £14,127 for the eight races with the manual machine. This was £5404 ahead of last year's total of £8723. The track was in splendid order, though perhaps not quite as fast as the times might appear to indicate, for tije distances are regarded as being a little short of those stated. The principal event, the Levin Handicap, was won by the Trent hamtrained Rona Bay, who beat Royal Secret rather decisively. Lone Raider, making his reappearance after • a lengthy absence in Australia, won the McDonald Memorial at a good price after getting away badly. His win on the track which witnessed his initial success two or three years ago, appeared to be well anticipated. The Wanganui-owned Airing, well handled by the Australian jockey E. Peck, made his record three wins on end when he led from start to finish in the Weraroa Hack Handicap, and Mittie notched a double, taking the first and last races in good style. Otauru King won the hurdles and Rustem and Essex scored in the hack sprint and distance hack events respectively. Muttie Fulfils Expectations. Mittie was favourite for the Maiden race but at an excellent price and she won comfortably. It was a straggling start, Rotoma being one of those who dwelt, and Reserve Bank and Mittie went out ahead of Thomist, Gay Step and Kia Ora. Mittie soon assumed command and showed the way along the back to Gay Step, Reserve Bank, Kia Ora and Thomist. Gay Step accompanied Mittie across the top and into the straight, with Kia Ora, Reserve Bank, Southern Blood, Party and Rotoma following. Over the final stages Mittie held her own to win by half a ength from the fast-finishing Rotoma, with Southern Blood half a length further back. Then came Gay Step and Kia Ora, with a gap back to Reserve Bank, Mush and Party. Otauru King Wins Hurdles. Limulus was the favourite for the Manakau Hurdles but was beaten into second place by Otauru King, who jumped without a mistake. Vinco carried the tapes away, Mowgli going out with Otauru King and Miss Hushabye, but Otauru King soon held command from Miss Hushabye, Limulus and Mowgli, with Evermore and Saltspray following. Vinco ran down the hurdle near the seven furlongs but Otauru King led along the back a length ahead of Miss Hushabye, with Limulus closing up on them and a gap back to the others, | Limulus ran up to the leaders three furlongs from home but made a bad jump, and Otauru King was eight or ten lengths clear into the straight, with Miss Hushabye nearest of the others. Otauru King was not troubled to win by four lengths from I Limulus, with five lengths back to Miss Hushabye, and then came Evermore and Mowgli. Airing’s Fourth This Season. The Weraroa Hack Handicap was a good netting race, with Airing, Cloudy Bay and Red Sand evenly 1 backed. Airing got away well at barrier-1 rise, Windward, Dorado, Red Sand,, Laggard and Revival being most prominent of the others. Biygain joined Airing as they ran into the back stretch and the pair were clear of Windward, Red Sand. Dorado and Laggard, but Export commenced to move up on the outside from the half-mile and on the home turn Airing, Biygain, Windward, Red Sand, Export, Revival and Cloudy Bay was the order. Airing came on to win by a neck from Export, with Windward a length back. Revival was fourth and then came Biygain, Red Sand, Dorado and Otaki. Big Race to Rona Bay. Royal Secret carried most money I for the Levin Handicap, but there .vas also good support for the others ’our, with Rona Bay at a good price. Royal Secret at once assumed the role of pacemaker and piloted Rona Bay, Grand Jury, Terry and Round Score out of the straight. There was no alteration along the back stretch, though Terry commenced to | move up as they approached the half-’ mile, and she headed Grand Jury three furlongs from home, but Royal Secret and Rona Bay were still in command. Once they straightened up Rona Bay overhauled Royal Secret and won by half a length. Terry was a length and a-half away, with Grand Jury a similar distance back and Round Score last. Essex Convincingly. Geitel carried a little more than Essex in the Lake Hack Handicap, but there was good money for several others. Ora, Nightlass, Bacchus Marsh. Earl Colossus and Essex were in the van running out of the straight, Essex being slow and running wide on the turn, where Nightlass took command from Kia Ora, Earl Colossus and Geitel, Essex moving up fast. By the time they had reached the five furlongs Essex had run into a clear lead, and he was followed past the half-mile by Nightlass, Geitel, Earl Colossus and Ingenuity. The lastnamed moved up to third place crossing the top and followed Essex and Geitel into the straight, but Essex was always doing it nicely to win by two lengths from Ingenuity. A length back was Geitel with a gap back to earl Colossus, Bacchus Marsh and Nightlass. Rustem Scores Decisively. Rustem was favourite for the hack sprint acd after being well placed to

the straight he went through the field to score decisively from Eara, who had to make up a lot of ground over the last bit.

Sanhedrin and Gladium were slow away and Vonia Park was the early pacemaker from Jewish Lad, Minnow, Quake, Rustem and Going Gay. There was not much alteration going down the back stretch except that Quake I had moved up and was in second place as they swept into the straight. Vonia Park was still in front, then came Quake, Jewish Lad, Rustem and Minnow with the last-named falling back. A furlong from the post Rustem was in front and galloping strongly. Then Eara came on the scene and she was just within a length of Rustem at the post. Jewish Lad was a length away and Sanhedrin close up fourth. Next were Minnow, Windward and Vonia Park. Lone Raider Over Seven. Of the nine starters for the McDonald Memorial Lone Raider was seventh in the order of betting but that did not prevent him from winning decisively. Lone Raider got the worst of the start and Beau Gallante was also slow to move. Biygain settling down in the lead, followed by Lord Moutoa, Full Throttle, Gold Mission, Hunting Lodge, Darecourt, Jubilee Song and Lone Raider in that order. Little change took place in the run down the back, and Biygain, Full Throttle, Lord Moutoa, Darecourt, Hunting Lodge, Gold Mission and Jubilee Song were all ahead of Lone Raider on the home turn. The field spread across the straight at the distance and Lone Raider came up on the outside to win by three-quarters of a length from Lord Moutoa, with Biygain a similar distance back. Hunting Lodge was fourth and then came Darecourt, Full Throttle and Jubilee Song. Mittie Completes Double. Peter Beckford was a hot favourite for the concluding event but Mittie, second in request, completed a useful double with a rather convincing win. Lifeguard was smartest out from the topes and led Mittie, War Lap and Collodion down the back, with Peter Beckford, slow in finding his feet, just ahead of the only other starter. There was little change in the order crossing the top, save that Peter Beckford made up a little of his leeway and Collodion dropped back. Mittie took charge tfnee they straightened up and came on for an easy win by two lengths from Lifeguard. Peter Beckford was a length back, in front of War Lap. with Collodion last.
