WAIRAKEI DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB A shoot, for the Wairakei Cup, was held on Saturday. Conditions were fair for shooting, J. Carey proving the winner. The final shoot for this half of the season will be held next Saturday, when the McGregor Cup will be shot for. Seven shots were tired at each of the three ranges—--300, 500, and 600yds—the scores being:—J. Carey, 29, 29, 31, 10, 99; W. Hyde, 31, 32. 29, 6, 98; S. A. Meads, 30. 32. 31. 3. 96; S. M. Meads, 34, 29, 31. 1, 95; J. H. Thompson, 33, 31. 31. 0. 95: J. Boshier. 29, 26, 26, 12, 93; S. M. Stent. 26. 34. 28, 5. 93; A. Hancock. 27. 28. 20, 14, 89; J. Rose, 26. 18. 26, 15, 85. SERVICES HONOURED A pleasing event took place at the Wairakei Defence Rifle Club's shoot on Saturday, when Mr W. Boshier, senr.. on whose property the range had been for over thirty years, was present, and was the recipient of a travelling rug in appreciation. Mr S. A. Meads, president of the club, in making the presentation, said that when Mr Boshier gave up his property, the members of the club felt they would like to show their appreciation in some way and asked Mr Boshier to accept the rug and the good wishes of the club. Mr Boshier suitably responded, expressing thanks for the gift and remarking on the good feelings that has always existed between the club and himself. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Members are asked to note that htat the November meeting has been postponed until the third Tuesday, November 17, on account of the postponement of the visit of Mrs Watt to Palmerston North. Members are also asked to plant three potatoes for the institute competition. as special seed potatoes are not being supplied. CHRISTMAS EVE CELEBRATIONS A meeting of those interested in the entertainment of the children of the district on Christmas Eve, was held on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Morgan presiding. It was decided to run the entertainment on the same lines as last year. Mrs Tompkins was reappointed secretary.
