WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB

I THE SUMMER PROGRAMME TOTAL STAKE-MONEY OF £2150 For the summer meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, to be held on January 28 and 30, 1937, the programme approved by the general committee provides for stake-money to the extent of £2150 spread over the iwo days. Eight events will be decided each day, so that stake-money works out at average of £134 a race. It is an increase of £2OO over last year. It is satisfactory to note that the Wanganui Cup continues on the programme, the stake allotted here being £250. Had a trophy been forthcoming for this event—there is still time for it to be provided from some generous source—tne attraction provided by the race would have been so much the greater. On the second day of the meeting the Earle Stakes will be the principal event, with a stake of £2OO. The open sprints will be the Flying Handicap (£150) and Campbell Handicap (£165) on the respective days. Another satisfactory feature of the programme is that in no instance will the stake-money be less than £lOO. That is as it should be with a metropolitan club like the Wanganui Jockey Club, and no doubt the committee are just as keen as owners and trainers to see this minimum steadily raised. An alteration in the order of running the events will be that the Juvenile Handicap each day will be the second race, instead of ranking this on the day’s order, changing places with the Maiden Race. The Juvenile Handicap is likely to be five furlongs instead of six. Following is the programme for next January, with last years figures in parentheses:— First Day. £ £
