DARGAVILLE CLUB

MEETING AT AVONDALE PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. Apart from a threatened division in the opening event, most of the fields to be seen in action at Avondale tomorrow on the occasion of '.he opening of the Dargaville Racing Club's annual fixture are on the small side, but generally they are better than anticipated. The course promises to be in excellent order and betting will be on the win-and-place system. The number of acceptors in the Maiden Handicap exceeds the safety number by three, and so late scratchings may obviate the necessity to divide the event. Never has there been a better class field engaged in the Dargaville Cup than that to be seen to-morrow, nine being left in. Master Brlerly is fining down now and should soon start to show form. Velocipede has 81b. more than when he won the Avondale Cup. his last start, on this track four weeks ago. so he cannot be ruled out. Mazir was very sore after his Mitchelson Cup run. so his condition on the day will reveal his chances, which otherwise are first-class, for he is nowallowed one pound 'by Velocipede for a neck defeat in the Avondale Cup, and he has improved considerably m the interim. Knight of Australia has been racing well of late and his turn is due. for he was placed in the Avondale Cup and last Monday s King Edward Handicap. Smart Three-year-old. The second half of the Dargaville Cup Handicap is headed by GayTalkie a very smart three-year-old, and as he is on the minimum he Should take a lot of beating, for he appears to stay and the long straight ,-iere will be all in his favour. Bonny Gay raced well at Paeroa. and Silver Brier has not improved on her early spring efforts. Horowhenua still continues to get beaten, despite line track work, but this may be his chance with a small field. King Tut may find the opposition a hit hard. Summed up, the issue appears to lie between Mazir and Gay Talkie. Star Artist appears to have lost her early brilliance, and so the long straight at Avondale will enhance her prospects in the Avoca Handicap, for she is rapidly coming to her best. Triune, Tray Bit, Solaria. Sebrof and Gay Defence are also good prospects, but Star Artist's turn may be near at hand. A Juvenile Match. The Nursery Handicap appears to be a match between Bachelor King and Airam, provided the latter can be got away on terms. She would not go 31 ear the barrier at Ellerslie last Monday. Others that appear to »c well placed in the minor events are Sureila. Benighted, Whirlmint and Light Comedy. Form horses engaged to-morrow are the following:— Nursery Handicap.—Bachelor King, Airam. Maiden Handicap.—Tip Toes, Bon Star Fox Moth, Valamita. Kaihu Hack Hurdles.— Benighted, Dark Mabie, Lap Up. Dargaville Cup.—Gay Talkie. Mazir. Knight of Australia.
