PATEA PLUNKET SOCIETY Mrs R. W. Haddow presided at the monthly meeting of the Patea Plunket Society on Thursday. Mesdames L. W. Austin, L. T. Adams, R. S. . Crawford, C. V. Herbert, G. Macken, i T. Nelson, R. Hunger, J. N. Anderson, j T. Prescott, C. V. Whittington, F. Bostock, Miss Harris, and Mrs L. Honeyfield (secretary), Mrs T. E. Roberts. Apologies were Mesdames D. Roots, T. Anderson, E. Harris, and P. Brooke-Taylor. Miss Tompkins, Plunket nurse, reported for September that there were 73 Patea babies on the books and 51 I older, 132 babies at out-stations, and 83 older children, making a grand total of 339. New cases: 2 mothers and 2 babies; out-stations, 4 mothers and 4 babies; total new babies, 6d. Days at office: Patea 4, out-stations 18. Visits to homes: Patea 26 old and 5 new; out-stations 2 old, 6 new; grand total, 39. Visits to rooms: Patea, 82 adults, 69 babies, 14 older children. Out-stations, 155 adults, 120 babies, 58 older children; grand total, 498. Nine birth notifications were sent, 6 answers, 2 letters, ano 16 telephone rings. Progress of mothers and babies much as usual. Comparing the figures, the president said there were two new babies in Patea this year as against four last year, and at out-stations six as against 14. Dr. Helen Deem was sorry she was unable to help the society by giving a lecture. Mr W. F. De Roo, health inspector, advised that there were no expenses in connection with his visit to lecture, and thanked the society and extended them best wishes for the future. The lecture had the sanction and approval of his department, and he was personally rewarded by the attentive hearing and cordial reception. Miss J. Palk, secretary of the Christchurch Plunket Society, expressed sincere thanks for the flowers forwarded, the society being very grateful to all who helped, the proceeds from the flower day amounting to £3BO. The Dominion Secretary wrote asking for the appointment of delegates to the conference.—The secretary reported she had forwarded the information. The president reported on the deputation to the Borough Council re compulsory testing of herds, stating tnt council had given them a very cordial hearing. The council advised that whilst it could not force their request without making a by-law, they were writing to milk vendors, pointing out that failing their obtaining a voluntary certificate of freedom from tuberculosis in their herds, the council would seriously consider making the same compulsory by passing a by-law before granting further licences for the supply of milk. It was stated that it was to be brought up at the next municipal conference, and that the Government would probably pass a law on it in the future. The New Plymouth branch of the Plunket Society appointed Mrs Haddow as their proxy to the conference in the advent of their delegate, Mrs Weston, being unable to attend. Mesdames L. W. Austin and L. T. Adams presented the house committee’s report, which included the suggestion of baby chairs and toys being provided for the rooms.—lt was decided to acquire a musical chair. The Fox Film Company kindly donated the replica of the Dionne Quintuplets from the "Country Doctor” to the society. Notice was received of the Kakaramea branch social afternoon to be held on October 31, members signifying their intention of attending. The shop day in aid of the delegates’ fund and the Karitane Hospital was discussed and arranged for November 27, Mrs Austin kindly donating a baby’s knitted outfit. VWIENUAKURA W.D.F.U. Mrs J. Wynne presided at the monthly meeting of the Whenuakura W.D.F.U. on Tuesday. Apologies were received from Mesdames A. G. Crawford (president), S. Hird. Rex Hamerton, T. Sheahan. T. Hurley. T. Crawford, J. Williams, and Miss : Munro. Each member decided to buy stamps to assist the health stamp campaign. Hearty thanks were accorded Mrs W. F. Sheild for her interesting demonstration on making a Victorian posy, members experimenting at the same time. The competition for the best cocoanut ice, judged by Mrs Sheild, was won by Mrs G. Hurley, with Mrs Blake 2, and Mrs G. Hurley 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Allen, I McDonald, and Miss Hurley. PERSONAL Mrs J. S. Pearce and Miss Pearce entertained at bridge at “Cawood” this week, Miss Kelly being the guest of honour. Lilac and spring flowers filled the rooms. Miss Kelly and Mrs T. E. Roberts carried off the bridge honours. Misses Joan Illingworth and Phyllis Bourke have returned to the Napier Hospital. Mrs I. Jones hostessed a delightful bridge evening this week. I Thursday afternoon, Mrs F. Bostock was “at home” to her friends. Mrs R. S. Crawford’s guests, Miss E. Collins, has returned to Rapanui. Miss P. McKenna has returned from Takapau. , An invitation was received by the Patea Garden Circle to visit the lovely gardens of Mrs Leslie Hamilton, Manutahi, in the future. Mrs A. A. Carey president of the S.T. Institute Federation, visited I Ohangoai yesterday, to form an institute there.
