MARTON A. AND P. SHOW HOROWHENUA ALTERS ITS DATES To obviate any adverse effect upon he attendance of the public as a result of the recent change in the statuary half-holiday the 1937 show >f the Horowhenua A. and P. Associaion will be held on Friday and Satjrday, January 29 and 30, and not, is in previous years, on a Tuesday md Wednesday. In addition, for the first time in the history of the association. the show will be continued as i night show on the night of the second day. These arrangements were made at this month’s meeting of the general committee of the association. Mr H. I. Lancaster presided. Marton’s Dates The alteration of Horowhc.. dates should prove a great boon the Marton A. and P. Associate Show, the date for which was Thursday, 28th., and the Marton ram fair, 29th. January. Marton will now be able to secure Wednesday, 27th., for its show and Thursday, 28th., for the ram fair, so both fixtures should be beneficially affected, as Friday is the Feilding stock sale. As soon as official information Is received of the alteration in dates from Horowhenua, a meeting of the general committee of the Marlon A. and P. Association will be called to consider the alteration. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB SANSON DEFEAT MARTON Members of the Marton Miniature Rifle Club journeyed to Sanson on Thursday evening to compete against the Sanson Club. Although defeated, the local club spent a most enjoyable evening, being entertained to supper after the match. Late in i ■ proceedings, Miss Beth Parkes, of Palmerston North, and partner, gave an exhibition of modern ballroom dancing. N.Z. NATIONAL PARTY The divisional organiser (Mr. T. G. Wilkes) of the New Zealand National Party is meeting with great success in the formation of branches in the Rangitikei Electorate. During this week he has visited several towns on the Main Trunk Line and a strong membership has been enrolled at Hunterville, Ohingaiti, and Taihape. THE VIOLA BARKER SCHOOL OF DANCING The third item on the programme for the dancing display to be given by pupils of Miss Barker on October 30, in the Civic Theatre, is a clever tap dance by Syd Anderson, while for the encore he will use a different tap. This will be followed by the everpopular number the sailor’s hornpipe, given by Prudence Church, Leslie Ashcroft. Margaret Caithness, Robin McCully, Mary Shannon, and Sandy Caithness. All will be dressed alike in man o’war suits. Michael Kendrick will then enter and render a solo hornpipe, with the men o’war forming a chorus. Webby will be pleased to hear that she is progressing satisfactorily after her recent illness. MARTON GOLF CLUB The Rangitikei Golf Club will play an inter-club match on the Marton links to-day. Owing to the personnel of the Rangitikei team being incomplete, the Marton team will be picked on the links at approximately 1.15. A draw for those not picked will also be made. The match with the Hawkestone Golf Club during the week-end has been postponed. As all the competitions are far from completion the committee ■ has decided to postpone the official closing until a later date. Members will be advised of this as soon as the date has been fixed. In the meantime all those who have matches to get off are requested to play their games at the very earliest. LADIES’ CROQUET MARTON CLUB OPENED The official opening of the Marton Ladies’ Croquet Club took place on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of friends and members. The president, Mrs. Hempieman, welcomed the visitors, and said how much members appreciated the kindly interest they took in the club. Mrs. Milne, who was presented with a dainty shoulder spray by Miss Ferens, played the first ball through a hoop and declared the lawns open for play. A dainty afternoon tea was then dispensed. Competitions were played during the afternoon, winners being:—Clock croquet, Mrs. Staples; ladder, Mrs. Gracie; skittles, Mrs. Wood. The winners of other competitions were Mrs. F. Williams, Miss Lorimer, and Mr. Ken Gatrell. DANCE RECITAL OF MISS HAY WARD’S PUPILS Lovers of children will be delighted to hear that the yearly recital of Miss Hayward’s School of Dancing :s to be held on Tuesday, October 20. This year the programme will include that attractive fairy story “Tbe Woman in the Shoe” as well as "Tl.i Sleeping Beauty.” Excellent progre: is being made by the very talent? young people Miss Hayward has under her charge, and the programme is full of beautiful ballets and songs The dancing is of a very high standard and ensemble work is most striking and the frocking very attractive and dainty. PERSONAL Mr. Walter Manning, of the NewZealand Refrigerating Company, is retiring after 35 years' buying service with the company, in the North and South Islands. Mr. Manning has spent the last 20 years in Marton, where his successor, Mr. J. N. Lawson, will take ud residence.
