MAJESTIC THEATRE

“THE KING STEPS OUT" The King Steps Out,” screening finally to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre, is a film without defect, and its appeal has been such that an extended season was a foregone conclusion. Grace Moore's ability as a singer an - as an actress are too well known to need description. The story is the old one of the king who falls in love with a princess masquerading as a dressmaker, but it is given a delightfully fresh interpretation by the director, Josef von Sternberg. The music by Fitz Kreisler, embodies the slow section of "Caprice Viennois,” arranged for the voice, fragments of other familiar violin compositions and a series of soprano solos which have been drawn from Kreisler's opera "Cissy,” which was staged in Vienna several years ago. Excellent supporting performances are given by Franchot Tone and Walter Connolly. The supporting programme is of a variety and quality in keeping with the principal picture. “Fury” on Saturday. A new pair of romantic stars, a story of dramatic force, and the inspired direction of Fritz Lang, noted Viennese film-maker, promise stirring entertainment in “Fury,” which opens at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday. Spencer Tracy and Sylvia Sidney portray a pair of young lovers, planning to marry. They are separated by Tracy's arrest as a kidnap suspect. The small town in which he is held in prison for questioning is quickly stirred to action by ugly rumours. Led by a viciuos type of trouble-maker (played by Bruce Cabot), a mob storms the prison to "get” the suspect. The scenes that follow, showing the sheriff's futile attempt to fight off the rabble and the actual wrecking and burning of the prison, contain realism of a hair-raising order. The closing sequence, in which 22 of the mobsters are on trial for their lives, builds to a powerful climax and is sustained right up to the logical though surprising twist that precedes the final fadeout.
