MARTON

SUDDEN DEATH mr. w. a. McCluskey Al the Hunterville Courthouse yesterday morning an inquest was held before the district coroner (Mr. F. C. Wilson) into the cause of the death of Mr. William Allred McCluskey, a single man, and a veteran of the South African and the Great War. He was 67 years of age and had been employed as a labourer on Mr. H. J. Livingstone’s farm at Whareroa, about 16 miles from Hunterville, for the last two years. He had been in apparent good health, but was found by Mr. Livingstone on Saturday afternoon dead in his bed in the whare which he occupied by himself. There was no doubt that death occurred peacefully and suddenly and Dr. Burnett testified that it was tht result of old-standing heart disease. The coroner’s verdict was according to the medical evidence. It is understood that deceased had relatives in both Wanganui and Marton. THE CORONATION HALL The old Coronation Hall no longer adjoins the County Council office having been successfully moved on skids about a chain further along the street preparatory to the erection of the new County Council buildings. PERSONAL Mr. P. Keedwell, on the local staff of Messrs. Abraham and Williams, left yesterday to take up a relieving position at the head office, Palmerston North, for a fortnight. CYCLE ROAD RACE The third cycle road race of the series will be held to-morrow. The course is once round the Tutaenui block and once round the Nga Tawa block, a distance of 17 miles. The race will start from the White Hart Hotel at 5 p.m. sharp. Handicaps have been declared by Mr. A. M. Smart as follows:—H. Archibald, 3min.; A. Blair, 5; F. Tolley, 5; T. Brider, 5, L. Griffin, 8; J. Blackwell, 9.30,; L. Mitchell 9.30. HAWKESTONE GOLI CLUB Cedal rounds will be played to-day. Following is the draw:—Mrs. Grade v. Miss Butler; Mrs. Ball v. Mrs. Williams; Mrs. Franke v. Mrs. Murrow; Mrs. McChesney v. Mrs. Frederick, Miss Slight v. Mrs. Thomson; Mrs. Hempieman v. Mrs. Walsh; Miss Lorimer v. Mrs. Kendrick; Mrs. Broughton v. Miss Robins; Mrs. Parkes v scorer. All championship matches unplayed must be played this week. Players unable to play must default at once. A BLACKBIRD THAT ISN’T. To the host of familiar conundrums Marton can add another which should greatly exercise ornithologists “When is a blackbird not black?’ The answer is obvious to those whe have seen an outcast member of the blackbird family frequently haunting High Street. It is marked like a magpie, with white predominating, but it is not an albino for the eyes'* are not pink. Last year a blackbird with a white bar round its throat was often to be seen in the grounds at “Cedai Hill,’’ Tutaenui Road, and possibly the bird seen in High Street is an offspring. It is certainly a curiosity and as such seems to be suspect by others of the tribe, for it customarily seeks lor worms on its own. MARTON BOWLING CLUB OPENING TO-MORROW The committee of the Marton Bowling Club met last night, Mr T. Low presiding. Those present were: Messrs J. Miles, A. Mogridge, W. Hamer, S. Connell, B. Parkes, G. Ferens, and S. Goebel (secretary). It was decided to open the season to-morrow if the weather is suitable. A number of rinks from neighbouring clubs will be present. Morrison (Wednesday), W. Hamer, S. Goebel, and B. Parkes (Saturdays). The following new members were elected: Messrs C. Papp, J. Andrews, A. Henderson, C. Freeth, and R. Upchurch.
