S.A.’s BIG PURCHASES ABROAD

UP £6,000,000 IN SEVEN MONTHS. As one of the world’s best “cus-tomer-countries” South Africa continues to hold its own. During the first seven months of this year Union purchases abroad amounted to £48,392,000 and exceeded those for the corresponding period of the previous year by more than £6,000,000. In July goods worth £7,489,333 entered the country as compared with £6,574,136 in July, 1935. To the Government the heavy increase in imports means increased customs revenue and the million mark was again exceeded in July, £1,022,321 being collected, an improvement cf more than £lOO,OOO on last year. South African exports were well maintained during July, the total value being £9,429,084, an increase of £550,000 as compared with last year. Gold bullion to the value of £7,424,272 was exported. Other important export items were: general merchandise, £1,054,000, diamonds £286,000, and wool £250,000.
