Smoke Concert Speech. Something of a record in smoke concert speeches must have been made by the general manager of railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, at the reunion of the Auckland branch of the Railway Officers’ Institute on Saturday night. In responding to the toast of ‘ The Department,’’ Mr. Mackley dealt with a large number of matters of interest to railwaymen, speaking for well over an hour. He was interrupted at one stage by a performer who had apparently not anticipated a long speech and protested that he was missing a later engagement. Mr. Mackley offered to let the item be given at that stage but there were cries for him to continue his speech. The interrupter said he wished to apologise and the incident closed with noth parties shaking hands.
