RUGBY FOOTBALL. Last Saturday saw the end of the 1936 Rugby season, the final game being between the Taihape Maoris and a combined Tokaanu-Katana native team. Taihape won by 16 points to 5. The attendance was not large and comprised chiefly natives. For the winners tries were scored by Tumu, Payne, T. Chase and R. Chase. Two of the tries were converted by B. Chase. , Weipiha scored a try for the Tol.i.anu-Ratana team. The try was converted. Tommy and Rangi Chase played well for the Taihape Maoris. GENERAL NEWS. Half the proceeds from to-morrow night’s military ball will be devoted to the Rest Room funds. Constable E. McDonnell, of Waipiro Bay, is at present on a visit to Taihape, where he is spending part of his annual leave. At the monthly sitting of the Taihape Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, G. Quigley claimed £7 2s from Jacobsen Bros, for cutting logs which were carted to the Utiku Box Factory by defendants. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £6 7s and costs. A car driven by Mr. H. Whale left the road and toppled over the bank at Winiata on Saturday night. The vehicle was badly damaged, but the driver escaped serious injury. LADIES’ GOLI CLUB The third qualifying round in connection with the Taihape Ladies’ Golf Club championships will be played on Thursday and Saturday of this week. C Grade (flag match for a golf ball).—Miss Whelan v. Mrs C. Bradley; Miss Mouldy v. Miss Simpson; Miss Spooner v. Miss Couper; Mrs Bond v. Miss Quirk. Bradlev, 3 down. • GENERAL NEWS The last big dancing event of the season —the military ball—will be held in the Town Hall, Taihape. to-morrow evening (Wednesday*, and the committee that is attending to the necessary details of organisation are sparing neither time nor effort to make the function an outstanding success. Red, white and blue streamers are being used to decorate the hall, which will present a most pleasing appearance when the decorations have been completed. The music will be provided by Jack Hooker’s Merrymakers (Stratford), while the supper will be on the same lavish scale as in the past. Particulars are advertised.
