POLICE CHARGE WITH BATONS. WORKERS WANT MORE PAY AND LESS WORK. Received Sept. 19. 12.10 p.m. SINGAPORE. Sept. 18. Minor strikes among Chinese building workers and pineapple factory workers during the week resulted yesterday in a demonstration in the centre of the city. Police charged with batons and the fire brigade turned'a hose on the crowd. More strikes developed this afternoon. Over 2000 labourers at the R.A.F. Base joined the strikers, who are demanding more pay and less work and the formation of a union.
