INSECT PEST CONTROL.

THE FLOWER GARDEN. Rose Aphids.—Rose aphids should be destroyed before the young growths appear in the spring. Good results are obtained by using tobacco sprays with a little soapy' water. Tiger Moth Caterpillars.—Much damage is caused to carnations by these large, brown, hairy caterpillars. Spray with arsenate of lead. Carnation and Chrysanthemum Aphids.— Spray with nicotine preparations. Emperor Gum Moth.—The young caterpillars of this moth eat the young growths on roses. These are destroyed by the use of arsenate of lead. Rose Scale.—Spray roses with any of the oil sprays or lime-sulphur after pruning. Pick up and destroy all prunings, especially those from infested rose plants. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Springtails.—These are small white insects which attack the roots of beans and other plants. Treat soil with manurial insecticide or tipulite. Cabbage and Cauliflower Aphids.—To get rid of these green aphids, spray with nicotine sprays, Clensel, or Katakilia. Cherry Aphids.—These insects cluster on the young growth, turning same black. Spray in winter with lime sulphur to destroy eggs, and in summer with white oils, on tobacco sprays. Broan Bean Aphids.—These black aphids cause a lot of damage by sucking the sap from the plants. Use nicotine sprays. Harlequin Bug.—Use Clensel or similar sprays. Snails, Slugs and Woodlice.—Use calcium arsenate baits to get rid of these troublesome pests. This is prepared as follows:—! tablespoonful of calcium arsenate to lib. of bran; add 2 tablespoonsful of sugar to this, and mix into a mash, not too wet, and distribute amongst plants. Cutworm Caterpillars.—These caterpillars are destructive to cabbage and cauliflower plants. Use poisoned baits. Spray plants with arsenate of lead. Cabbage .Moth. —Cabbages, cauliflowers and turnips are usually troubled with the greenish larvae of these moths. Spray with arsenate of lead, 1 in 25. Wash vegetables before using.
