AVONDALE CUP DAY

SPRING MEETING FIELDS JUVENILES IN STAKES REVIEW OF PROSPECTS (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Sept. 18. One would have to go back very many years to find a field of 20 for the Avondale Cup, and this in itself suggests that there will be almost a surfeit of handicap horses for the spring meetings. This is very encouraging and with plenty of entries for the hack contests the season in the north promises to be very successful. All round the fields at the opening to-morrow of the spring fixture of the Avondale Jockey Club are excellent and this excellent track should provide thrilling racing. Betting will be on the old 75-25 per cent, system. The course should be in fine order. It is probable that the three good horses at the head of the Avondale Cup candidates, Jonathan, Master Brierly and Red Manfred, may not be sufficiently forward, but the firstmentioned comes to hand quickly for a big gelding and he may make the most forward showing of this trio. Velocipede is useful and under his comparatively light impost and on a prospective dry track he should make a bold showing. Scotland won over this distance at the last Avondale meeting and he is a fit horse after his winter racing. Tybalt has yet to win beyond a mile, although his second in the last Mitchelson Cup left no doubt on that score. He was third in the sprint at Ellerslie last month and tlie progress he has made in the interim should enable him to go very close to the money. Mazir will not lack friends. s The liveliest interest is being evinced in the Whirlwind gelding’s progress in his preparation, for he is so well placed in this field that he would only need to be near his best to beat the lot. Tradesman is a fit horse and rain on the day will see him difficult to head off, especially as he outstayed the Jellicoe Handicap field last month. Lord Vai is fit and Lagoon ought to improve on her last showing, while Gay Rose has run her best races on this course. The disappointing Horowhenua and Knight of Australia have condition in their favour, but they have disappointed too often. Silver Brier and Con Fuoco are two possibilities, the former having won at her last two starts, while Con Fuoco, patiently ridden to-morrow, would be particularly well suited by the long straight. King Musk never looked better and may surprise. It is an open race, with the condition of so many open to doubt, but those ready for the fray are Velocipede, Scotland, Mazir, Tradesman, Silver Brier and Con Fuoco, and they should fight it out.

The Flying Handicap is another problem for the early part of the season, with three of last season’s two-year-olds in Gallio, Golden Sheila and Golden Blonde likely to hold their end up well against the best of the older division. The best of the latter appear to be Royal Dance, Prince Acre and Puss Moth. The Avondale Stakes promises to attract about 18 runners and then it will be a gamble, for the half-mile start is positioned half a furlong after the big top bend commences and the horses are on the turn for nearly two furlongs before they come to the long straight. Horses seasoned by the race at Wanganui are Sigurd, Aiwai and Girl Pat and their experience should stand them in good stead tomorrow. Some of the local prospects may be Bowyang, the Love Pa^de —Elange bracket, Airam and Penzance, but the first-mentioned trio should prove to be the best. In the other events, horses that appear to stand out in their engagements are Mainland (Maiden Plate); Teddy Boy (Hurdles); F leetwind, or Surella, in the Henderson Handicap; Mandamus (Champion Plate), and Sergia (Swanson Handicap). The following horses should show up to-morrow:— 12.0—Maiden Plate: Mainland, Philemup, Strathire. 12.40—Kingsland Hurdles: Teddy Boy, Lucidus, Merry Lap. I.22—Henderson Ha~k: Fleetwind, Surella, Johnny Walls. 2.B—Avondale Cup: Mazir, Con Fuoco, Silver Brier. 2.so—Avondale Stakes: Sigurd, Aiwai, Girl Pat. 3.33—Champion Hack: Mandr mus, Debham, Queen Nona. 4.ls—Flying Handicap: Gallio, Royal Dance, Sinking Fund. s.o—Swanson Hack: Sergia, Penny-come-quick, Le Chasseur. Following is the list of acceptors:— 12.0 MAIDEN PLATE. (Of £100; seven furlongs.)

Riders in Avondale Cup. In the Champion Hack Plate on the opening day at Avondale the two maidens Singara and Rollicker, both owned by Mr. R. T. Reid, will be bracketed. The former is a halfbrother by Whirlwind to Bambury, Whirling, and Queen’s Counsel, and Rollicker is a half-brother by Hunting Song to High Comedy, Star Artist, and Light Comedy. Coupled horses in the Avondale Stakes will be Bowyang and Harlech, Elanage and Love Parade, and The Crooner and Bluffer. Most of the owners with horses in the two principal handicap events on Saturday have finalised their riders, and these are as follows: —
