TRAFFIC IN AVENUE

NEED FOR CONTROL CITY COUNCIL TO OBTAIN REPORT “The Avenue is becoming a death trap and it is time something was done about it,’’ said Cr. J. J. Scott at the Wanganui City Council meeting last night, when, as the outcome of a letter relative to the recent fatal accident at the Guyton Street intersection, the council decided to ask the Works Committee to look into the matter of appointing traffic inspectors on the busier corners at rush hours. The matter was raised in a letter from the mother of the unfortunate young lady who lost her 'life as the result of the accident in question. “I believe the time is coming when we will face up to the question of traffic control,” said the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, whose letter in reply was approved. Cr. Scott said the whole matter of traffic control in the Avenue should be gone into by the committee, and not only motor traffic but pedestrian traffic and cycle traffic also, particularly adjacent to tram stops. In his opinion, th* Avenue was used too freely and too easily by traffic which could very well use a less-frequer.ted exit from the city. “They like to drive up and down the Avenue to see what there Is to be seen.” he said, “but if they ar° in a hurry and the traffic Is thick they can always find a quicker way to get out. At the time of that unfortunate accident the tram traffic was blocking the street and it was a busy hour of the day.” The Mayor: You can accept my assurance that the engineer has taken note of what you have said all the matter will be gone into. Cr. J. Siddel’s: I agree with every word Cr. Scott has said. Some years ago the chief inspector used to fake duty at the busiest corner
