HITHER AND THITHER

Gift Parties. Miss Sylvia Aves, whose marriage to Mr. B*. A. Paetz, of Wellington, will take place to-day, has been the guest of honour at several delightful gift parties. Among the hostesses were Mrs. Long, Mrs. J. Bond, Misses Sybil Ross, Joan Graham, Ann Veitch and E. Cooke. Teacher Farewelled. Miss M. Macfarlane, who has been assistant teacher at the Sanson School for a number of years, has been appointed to a similar position at the Mangaweka School and commences duty at the beginning of next term. Members of the local Women’s Institute held a very pleasant gathering at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Drew on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Miss Macfarlane and made her a presentation of a set of book-ends and a cup and saucer, as a small token of appreciation of her interest in the institutes. Wellington Competitions. A number of Wanganui people are at present competing at the Wellington competitions, and some of them have been successful in their respective sections. Miss Daisy Clark, of Wanganui, was placed first in her violin solo (over 16 years), while Mr. Alan Pike was very highly commended for his singing in the men’s vocal scholarship section. In the soprano test solo Mrs. Rita Hulme, of Wanganui, was very highly commended, and Miss Jean Harman, also of this city, was highly commended in the sacred solo section.
