THE ST. JOHN’S CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELP Mr. J. Coull presided over a fair attendance of members and intending members of the St. John s Lawn Tennis Club (Inc.) held in the ‘’Rendezvous’ on August 18. The meeting proved successful, and resolutions passed thereat augur well for success in the club's activities during the coming season. The election of officers resulted as follows;—Patron, Mr. J. Coull; president, Mr. E. E>. Bennett: vice-presi-dents, Messrs. J. Marshall. M. L. Lampe. J. Dempsey. T. Russ. K. H. Hounsell. W. T. Purcell. F. Cunningham. and W. G. Billows; club captain. Mr. L. Smaller. vice-captain. Mr. G. Beadle: hon. secretary. Miss M. Stansfield; hon. treasurer. Mr. V. H. Fennell: non. auditor. Mr. J. Kearney; ladies’ committee. Misses E. Gillies. P. Hair, I. and O. Glover, and Mrs. Evans; men's committee, Messrs. D. Evans. G. Couch man. K. Coombe. L. Udy, A. Bassett-Smith. ' C. Beadle, and W. Thompson; delegates to W.L.T.A.. Messrs. M. L. Lampe. L. ’Smaller, and J. Marshall. It was resolved to hold the opening of the 1936-37 summer season on September 5. but this has since been amended to September 12. the latter being considered a more suitable date by the majority concerned. A decision that New Zealand will not enter a team in the Davis Cup ■ competition for the year 1936 is announced in the annual report of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Associa- j tion. to be presented at the forthcom- ! ing annual meeting. The report j states: "Owing to the unfavourable ; financial results of the Davis Cup matches played by New Zealand in the European zone during the previ- ■ ous two years, it was decided not to i enter a challenge for the year 1936. ■ A proposal is now being placed before a meeting of the Davis Cup nations to establish a Pacific zone, whicit would enable New Zealand to pl; y hallenge matches in the Pacific area.
