ON TARANAKI TRACKS

PREPARING FOR NEXT WEEK SATURDAY’S OPERATIONS (Special to “Chronicle.”) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 24. Conditions for galloping on the New Plymouth tracks on Saturday morning were worse than they have been for a long time and the horses which were sent along on the course proper, where the flags were out 40 feet, were cutting deeply into the turf. Fast times were an impossibility and Fersen’s five furlongs was easily the best gallop of the morning. Royal Secret (Eliott), Bantry (Davoran) and Red Sand (Savage) were associated over seven furlongs, the last-named being three lengths clear in the early stages and holding her advantage to the straight. The other two finished strongly, however, Bantry just having his head in front at the post, the last six furlongs having taken 1.30, which was a good indication of the sloppy condition of the track. Hunting Maid worked on the inner grass, on which track High Test, Tomoana and Ringside also executed useful tasks. Clessamor (Davoren) worked freely over a mile at an even 15sec to the furlong, and came home well. He looks a picture and is furnishing nicely. The Lackham—Senyora and Nigger Minstrel—Miss Cute fillies worked together on the inside grass track and Sporting Song als® did steady pacework. Fersen (Telford) was most impressive in his gallop with Brilliancy (Gray), being well out all the way. From practically a standing start from the five furlongs peg they ran the first furlong in 13sec., and came home the last half-mile in 55sec. On such a track 1.8 for the full distance was an outstanding gallop. Eagle's Eye (Bronze Eagle—Madame Ristori), Cardsharper, Mowgli and the Captain Bunsby gelding in i Gray's stable did good pacework. After breakfast Ngatirahiri (Pell) and Script (Bevan) ran a particularly [good five furlongs in 1.9 2-5, the last [half mile in 57 l-ssec. Davistock (Pell) was not bustled i to run his five furlongs in 1.10 2-5. White Heron (Toki) and Kaola (Davoren) were associated over a j round at a little better than threei quarter pace. | The Piuthair mare (Eley) and the i Rillet filly (Bevan* ran in from the • two furlong peg in 29sec. Bonny Glow and Lady Kyra did | strong pacework. Calshot (Pell) and Aussie Ra (Davoren) ran a good half mile in 56sec., ’after taking 27 2-ssec. for the first two furlongs. i Winsome Lu (Eley), who does not work well alone, took 59 l-ssec. for | her half mile. Cynical. Smile and Dorn Erma, who were to have jumped the big fences, did steady pace work. They will school on Monday.
