THE RUGBY REFEREE
METHOD OF CHOICE N.S.W. RUGBY REFEREES SEEK A CHANGE. The New South Wales Rugby Union referees are moving to have the method of appointment of referees for international matches changed. At present the names of three referees are submitted to the manager of the touring team, and from them the latter makes his choice. The referees’ representatives propose that the referees for all matches played by visiting or touring teams shall be appointed by the home union after consultation with the manager of the team, and that the council instructs the manager of the Australian team to tour New Zealand this season to waive his right of selecting the referee. The committee appointed by the New South Wales Rugby Union Council to report on procedure and policy in connection with reinstatements at the July meeting has not yet completed its task. The committee feels that the importance of the question demands more time for consideration, and will seek an extension until the September meeting of the council for the presentation of its report.
