CAPACITY OF BRIDGES
TESTING CERTAIN TYPES IN BRITAIN. [British Official Wireless] (R.eceived Aug. 14, 7.5 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 13. In order to gain in practical scientific data on the weight-carrying capacity of certain types of bridges which have been standing for many years, selected bridges scheduled for demolition are being deliberately broken by over-loading in the presence of officials of the Ministry of Transport and experts from the Departemnt ofc Scientific and Industrial Research and the Building Research Station. The first experiment took place to-day near Derby and others will follow in Birmingham and Essex. Ingenious mechanism has been devised for recording the gradual distortion of bridges under strain up to breaking point.
