JAPANESE PEARLERS
SAMPANS CONFISCATED NEW CALEDONIAN DECISION APPEAL TO HIGHER COURT SYDNEY, Aug. 6. A message from Noumea states that two sampans, which were detained on July 20, have been confiscated, with the fishing gear and shell, by order of the Court after a fine of 160 was imposed in each case. The captains of the vessels have appealed against this action to a higher Court. TWO DIVERS LOST TRAGEDY NEAR DARWIN DARWIN, Aug. 8. The pearling fleet which returned to Darwin reports the disappearance of two Japanese divers. They were wearing only a helmet, corselet, and flannels, and were being towed along the sea bed in 22 fathoms when the accident occurred. The divers signalled that they were about to gather shell. There were no further signals from them and when the life lines were hauled in the tenders found only the helmets and corselets. The pearlers believe that the divers had taken off the helmets to gather shell and the boat had drifted away too quickly, taking the helmets beyond the reach of the stranded divers.
