ABYSSINIA AGAIN
ABYSSINIA seems to be destined to be a land of surprises. The conquest of the country by the Italians was carried out with an unexpected speed. The methods used were by no means commendable, but they were certainly effective. Then came the proclamation by Italy of its assumption of sovereignty over the country, and the backdown of the League of Nations. Now it appears that the besiegers are themselves being besieged, and that there is a fair chance of the Italian garrison in Addis Ababa suffering severely, even though it does not hate to accept a defeat. The Emperor of Abyssinia declared that his people will continue to fight, but nobody believed that such an operation was possible, but the presumably impossible has been accomplished io the extent that a serious attack upon the capital has been staged. It is not easy to put aside this accomplishment, nor to minimise the significance of the movement itself, nor the possibilities which may arise out of the whole business. It is more than likely that the Emperor of Abyssinia ill bring about the downfall of the Duee from his high place and rob him of his power. If the Emperor does this the world will laugh at yet another history of tragi-eomedies.
