SWIMMING
VETERAN SWIMMER COVERS EIGHTEEN MILES Received Aug. 6, 9.30 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 8. Holbein, famous swimmer who is now 7o years of age, last evening swam the Thames from Richmond Lock to London Bridge, a distance of 18 miles, in 51 hours. Holbein has had many notable river swims. He made nine attempts to swim the Channel, the last being on his 52nd. birthday. He was nearest success in 1902, when he gave up within 500 yards of Dover.
