THAT STRAYING BULL

OUT ON ROAD AGAIN NOMINAL FINE IMPOSED. ABILITY OF FENCE QUERIED. [Pur Press Association] WELLINGTON, July 23. I “If the bull wishes to get out I do not consider that the defendant’s fence is adequate to stop it,” said Mr. Powles, counsel for the Hutt County Council in the Magistrate’s Court when Archibald George Gledhill of “Carnation Castle,” Lowry Bay, again appeared before Mr. Mosley 7 S.M., charged with allowing a Jersey bull to be at large on May 19 and 22. “I feel counsel is obstinate,” replied the defendant, disputing counsel's statement. “Even if the wall were of concrete, counsel would say that my bull could get over or get out.” The defendant said that the morning after he completed the fence he found, to his astonishment, that the wire had been loosened. Somebody’s steel saw had so penetrated a six-inch nail that it had snapped. “I have now bound it all around with wire,” he said. “I have carried out Your Worship's wishes in spite of the weather. “Look, Gledhill,” remarked His Worship, “this matter has now come to an end. If the ball gets out again you know Wiiat will happen. "It cannot, sir, it cannot,” replied the defendant. "But, he added, “how do I stand if they break in and let the bull out?” Mr. Mosley: It will be a horse of a different colour, but if it gets out and wanders at large again you can only expect to catch it. "I can’t catch it,” said the defendant, giving indication that he was hard of hearing. “You will catch it,” repeated Mr. Mosley firmly. Mr. Mosley said the defendant appeared to have done a good deal of work, and he did not propose to mulct him with more than a nominal fine. If the bull got out again, however, the fine would be considerably more than nominal. The defendant was convicted and fined 10s and costs 21s on each charge.
