WANGANUI MATCHES ASSOCIATION CUP (JAMES SATURDAY'S RESULTS (By "Spectator.”) In continuation ol the Cup competition in Wanganui soccer on Saturday, Thistle defeated Rangers alter a very evenly-contested game. Light showers created a greasy condition ol the grounds and the ball, and many scoring opportunities were lost accordingly. Rangers were the chiei in this respect and at one period, with Thistle penned in then' own area, the magpies gave a remarkable demonstration 01 "pressure without scoring.” Athletic, after opening the scoring account against Eastbrooke and holuing the advantage for some time, faded badly over the second hall and were a beaten team. The Brooke defence never permitted Atnletic forwards to converge in shooting position, and Eastbrooxe forwards snowed better understanding. Thistle 4, v. Rangers 2 Rangers were soon invading but could produce no score, Thistle defence playing an excellent game in tne early stages. Rangers were lirsl to register. They bustled into Healey, who had no chance to clear and McDonald found the net from close in. Thistle retaliated with an excellent movement but failed to score. After the interval Thistle were all out for the equaliser, and only the splendid exhibition of J. Hoskins between the posts delayed this. Time and again he averted apparently certain scores with the ability of a veteran but the pressure told. Fowler crossed a nice one from the wing and S. Kidd deflected into the net with good judgment. Flay speeded up considerably, with both sides striving for the lead. Rangers pressed consistently but the oall went over, struck the posts or was knocked widely past. Thistle turned stubborn defence into brilliant attack. Mackie' broke away and sped down the wing. Hoskins came across to tackle, but the pass went in to S. Kidd, who tapped it neatly into the I net, putting Thistle in the lead. ! Shortly after this Mackie again snapped up a chance and working infield, sent in a long shot, which Hoskins held but fumbled the clearance. S. Kidd, again well up with play, had no difficulty in banging the ball home from short range. Rangers attacked with determination. Blackmore crossed from the wing to Mclnnes, to McDonald, who drew his opponent and drove a perfect shot into the net from 20yds. out. In the latter stages of the game Rangers made great efforts to equalise, but Thistle had still a little in re-

serve. They showed this when Puddle, who had moved up to the forward line, added number four with gooa timing. Mr. F. Dear was the reieree. Eastbrooke 8, v. Athletic 2 Barron soon cleared from an Eastbrooke attack, and play swung to tne opposite end, where a penalty was awarded for an infringement. Wade made a successful kiCK ano Athletic took the lead early in the game. O. Wilson initiated tne movement for 'Brooke's opening score, and Quinn crossed high in tor Heatn to nnad home with excellent precision. Heath soon showed himself to be in deadly shooting iorm, and very shortly he added number two with a ternlic drive from well out, the ball just going inside the upright. Athletic hovered round Stokes. Barron only partially cleared from Clementson, and Quinn netted from an acute angle. Wade forced play upheld. Thomson and Wade were out- ! manoeuvred, Heath again rattling tne I net with a hard drive and Barron ! oeing well beaten. Goals were registered against Athletic quickly. Clementson kicked in to Spence, who centred nicely and Heath banged home again. A short-lived Athletic attack saw Stokes bring off an excellent save and Cooper cleared up-lield, where Clementson crossed and Heath added number six. Eastbrooke were walking j through the defence and Cavaye rei gistered with a short hard drive, and Health followed suit shortly after. Just before the final whistle Athletic scored again through a mistake by a 'Brooke back. Mr. G. Langslow was the referee. Juniors , Athletic 1, Eastbrooke 0. Marist 3, Rangers 3.
