WAVERLEY

SMOKE CONCERT. Ou Wednesday evening a highly successful smoke concert was arranged by the Waverley branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and over 30 members assembled in the supper room of the Town Hall. Representatives from the branches at Wanganui, Castleeliff, Maxwell, ana Patea were also present. Dr. Graves, the local president, was in the chair for the evening and acted as toast-master in the usual manner. Unfortunately the Waverley R.S.A. boasts of little talent and the entertainment during the evening fell to the lot of the visitors, songs being supplied bv the Wanganui party, also Mr. Blackie, Waitotara, and Mr. Jones, j Patea. During the past year the local branch I has shown a considerable increase in its members ami these meetings of old comrades, which were popular several years ago but had been allowed to die out, arc now proving as happy and successful as before. GIRLS’ AUXILIARY. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Girls’ Auxiliary held recently at the Manse, the meeting being presided over by Mrs. Fleming. 'Che annual report, and balance-sheet were read and adopted, and the minutes of the previous meeting read and eonlirmed. The following officers were elected: —President, Miss AR Patterson; vicepresidents, Misses M. Christensen and E. Castles; secretary, Miss L. Walker; treasurer, Miss A. Wall. We are pleased to say the year has been a satisfactory one, the club showing, not only a good credit balance, but also a steady increase in membership. The meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month at the Manse, for which we extend our grateful thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Ross. We also wish to extend our appreciation to the ladies of the P.W.M.U., who kindly allowed us to conduct a fancywork and sweets stalls at their recent missionary sale, resulting in the splendid sum of £7 4s 3d. This work is done by the members at the monthly meetings and the quality of the work done is generally of a high standard. The concert held on October 31, 1935, proved highly successful, proceeds amounting £l2 7s 9d. We extend thanks to all those who assisted us in .this effort. With the money raised this by the members’ efforts, we help to support the G.A. own missionary, Miss Matthews, of India, and a student in New Hebrides. We extend a cordial welcome to any who wish to join our ranks. A vote of thanks to the retiring officers and a daintw supper, served by the members, brought the evening to a close.
