WINTER RACES

SUNSHINE AND WIND THE VOGUE FOR TWEEDS -Much to everyone’s satisfaction, Saturday, the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter race meeting, was favoured with fine weather, with enough nip in the wind to make necessary the donning of fur coats and wraps over suits and woven ensembles. Tweeds in heather mixtures and the new “Country Life” weaves with their knoppe flecks of gay colour combinations were an important feature of the dressing, and looked very smart with a juniper, or a scarf, or a quill in the hat, picked up the predominating colour. Luxurious fur collars in a variety of shapes from the cape style to the long or wide revers were smart finishes on coats that were in ail kinds of cloth, including knoppe wools and boucles in gorgeous styles. Feather and quill mounts in a variety of colours were seen on the hats, most of which fitted snugly, others were of the halo, Breton, Cossack and shovel brim type with flat bows across the side or front. One or two were in the high Tyrolean style, and a few veils were worn. Autumn berries were much favour’d for sprays and spring flowers were worn by a large number. Navy blue was the predominating colour, while brown, brown rust, and a new shade of lighter blue, also black, were to be seen. Shoes were smart and chosen to match suits or coats. Fur coats in full length, hip-length and wraps in the form of capes were well represented.
