PLACEMENT OFFICERS
| WORK IN WANGANUI ’ EMPLOYERS’ CO-OPERATION SCHEME A SUCCESS The Government’s scheme of endeav- | ouring to get unemployed workers into l positions of a permanent nature-to a*I sist in restoring prosperity to the Dominion, has been successful in Wanganui to date, stated Mr. W. J. Guildford, placement officer on the staff of the Department of Labour, in conveisation with a “ Chronicle” reporter yesterday. Figures published in the “ Chronicle this week showed that Wanganui and New Plymouth were the lowest centres over a six weeks’ period. These, hu-wever. do not give a true indication as the placement, officer in Wanganui was appointed three weeks later than in other centres. Until such time as the officer receives, assistance in his work, his activity will be curtailed as the task of registering the men and securing from them full d - ‘tails of then pa.-t employment and checking up these statements is a lengthly job. Within the next week it is expected that be will be enabled tu establish personal contact with employers’ organisations and individual employers am] carry out the chief work of the office, which is that of selling jobs. To assist its placement officers, the Government intends to carry out an extensive publicity programme to bring before the notice of employers the nccessitv of establishing as great a number of men as possible in permanent positions. All the officers are cooperating in the work and each man is provided with a detailed list of the workers available in each centre, in each different category of employment. Thus, if a worker in a certain branch of a trade or industry is not available in the centre of enquiry his services i . an be obtained from some other disMr. Guildford said th&t he had rcI ceived the whole hearted co-operation uf employers in his interviews with | them.
