ON HAWERA TRACKS
PREPARING FOR WANGANUI TUESDAY’S OPERATIONS Marking the first occasion in several weeks, the tracks were soft and holding for fast work at Hawera on Tuesday morning, writes “Childers 1 ” in the Hawera Star. Operations were of an interesting nature, the majority of the Wanganui candidates be'ng allotted serious tasks. The poles were much further in than usual on the course proper, where all galloping was done, being about ten feet out from the rails. One Whetu (Cook) and Le Grand (Howe) were associated over furlongs. After being on terms practically throughout. Le Grand shaded his companion at the finish in 1.37. Le Grand worked nicely, although he had a decided advantage in the weights. One Whetu looks none the worse for his two hard races at Ellerslie and should again strip in the pink of condition at Wanganui. Corowa (Duncan) went laMlv over five furlongs in 1.12. He would haxe done better with companv. Supreme Court (Howe) hit out in attractive style over seven furlongs tn 1.35|. He did not have a great deal of pace’ on during the first couple of furlongs, but came home verv strongly. Silvanus (Hawke), DmMng Lady (Monklev) and Golden RiU (Cole) were companions over six furlong - Silvanus was going the best at the end to register 1.224. She was a couple of lengths ahead of Dancing Lady, vf-th Golden Rill, a similar distance back. The lastmentioned made up ground in the straight after being several lengths behind earlier. Student Prince (Hawkel end tne Captain Bunshy—Rewarewa eolt (Cole) were sprinted down the straight on t. c trial grass. Both moved a'ong in good stvle. Steeplechase Fences An interesting schooling bout over the steeplechase fences was performed bv Soloist (Webby) and Debut (Grinalay). They jumped the brush double together most satisfactorily. Soloist then being brought back to jump tne same fences again. Debut went on down the back stretch, where he baulked at the post-and-r.iils. Taken bavk he cleared it, but at the next obstacle, the hen-coop, he again baulked. However, at his second attempt he got over and then completed the roi.nd by jumping the double again without mishap. Debut showed no hesitation about the brush fences, but war having his first trial over the two solid jumps In companv he should experi-mce no difficulty with these fences. For a novice, Soloist gave a fine exhibition and it appears that he is going tn he equally as brilliant r.t jumping steeplechase fences as he has heen at bu-dling. A. E. Ellis will ride One Whetu and Le Grand at Wanganui. H. Webby rides Soloist and W. Grindiay Debut. G. W. Duncan has the mount on Advance Plane.
