BASKETBALL
WANGANUI MATCHES SATURDAY’S GAMES NOTES AND COMMENTS The matches played on Saturday in the Wanganui Basketball Asosciation's competitions proved very interesting to the large number of spectators at tire Queen 's Park School grounds. last play was the order of the day, i and this was no more evident than in I the game between Nga Toa and lech- ‘ meal College. A ery few expected to see the maroons beaten on Saturday, uut basketball is just as uncertain as ihe majority of sports. Technical, however, were deserving of their win, iv-T they are improving apace and are I getting in plenty of pactice, which naturally brings the best out of any I '.cam. Team-work is essential in | basketball ,anj practice is t‘he best i way of getting it. I Technical have improved in their | passing, the short snappy passes being | executed to " perfection —and they arc I ‘ ‘ snappy,’ ’ too. | Nga ioa naturally expected a hard game, but it is unlikely that they expected to be beaten. Sacred Heart beat Y.At. Club. This was another wm tor a school team, who are on a par with Technical, as was proved last week, when Sacred Heart and Technical had a great “go,” Technical winning by two goals. In their game, however, against Y.M. Club on {Saturday they were too good for the club team, winning by 26 to 1.1. The highest score registered against Sacred Heart this season so far is 13, so the club girls did wry well indeed to notch IL Y.M. Gymnasium oeat McKenzie s. The result of this game was never in doubt, as McKenzie's are not a very strong team and were very lucky to beat this team in the “knock-out’ competition last year. Nevertheless, McKenzie s are real hard triers, but not quite up to first Division standard. In the Second Division tue results of three ot the games, played at the Intermediate Scaool grounds, were never in du-übt. Nga Toa beat Cambridge B by splendid team-work and good passing, winning by 22 points. The maroons’ play w.| a treat to watch, but their passing was a trifle slow. Y.M. Club beat Intermediate. The red and blacks were far too strong foi the schoolgirls, who were too weak in their defenev to stop the Y.M. goalies, who were shooting from nil over the coutt, and very seldom missed. .Mrs. Carr played a great game for the red and blacks in the centre, -'er defensive play being of a very high standard. The goalies of this team also played well. For Intermediate, I Miss Wilson at centre played very I well. I Glencoe beat’ Technical B and as tn the two previous games, there ’■’■as only one team in it. Glencoe, by fine" team-work, went ahead to win by 26 to 6. This team has improved considerable in their passing and if they keep this kind of play up they should soon be climbing up the ladder. Technical tried hard to keep the score down but could do very little with a team who, on the day, were splendid in all departments of the game.
