I WANGANUI CLUB INTER-CLUB SHIELD CONTEST AT DANNEVIRKE A team of .10 runners from the Wanganui Harrier Club is visiting Danncvirke to-day to compete in the annual inter-club cross-country championships. The Wanganui team is a strong one and it is expected that it will hold the shield which it won last year in conjunction with the Napier Club. Members of the team will assemble at the Post Office at mid-day. Members who are not making the trip will compete in a handicap race j from the Aramoho Boating Club's shed I at 2.30 p.m. MARATHON RACE AUCKLAND CLUB’S EXPERIMENT liie Auckland Club's marathon race will be held to-day and, although the Held is not very large, a great deal of interest is being shown in the contest, states the N.Z. Herald. This race will be the lirst full marathon of -6 miles 385 yards to be run in Auckland, and only the second race c-f its kind to be held in New Zealand. Providing the event is a success, and there is no reason why it should not be so, the Auckland Club will make it an annual contest, and efforts will be made to attract distance men from all parts of the country. Chief interest today will be centred in J. "W. Savidan’s performance, and while he can be regarded as practically a certainty to be tire first to finish, the interest will be in the time he takes to cover the distance.. Savidan did not run in the Olympic marathon at Lu-s Angeles in 1932, as he bad done no training for the marathon distance. H-e was not considered by the selectors i of this year’s Olympic team for tihe ! Berlin marathon, as he had no pcrI formanecs to show for such a distance.
