SCHOOL AFFAIRS The monthly meeting of the Taihapc District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, when there were present Messrs E, Loader (chair), G. Shcrson, L. Haydon, W. Jurgens, G. C. Noble, Dr. Hay, Rev. King, A. Fuller (secretary), and the headmaster (Mr J. C. Whibley). A circular letter was received from i the Wanganui Education Board stating that a special regulation provides that the grade of the school mav be determined on an average attendance equal to 9u per •cent, of the roll number as at March 31. The board had regraded the Taihape School in accordance with the new regulation as from February 1 and it had been placed in grade VIA. The letter added that the following staff alterations have been necessitated through the increased grade: fl) Appointment of a grade VI headmaster. The board had decided to nromote Mr Whibley to the position. (2) Appointment of additional grade 1 female assistant. Miss M. J. Oyston’s appointment had already been confirmed. The Chairman: Tt is indeed gratifying to know that the school has gone up a grade, and T would like to congratulate Mr Whibley on his well-de-served promotion. We might have lost him. congratulations to Mr Whibley on being promoted. The board also wrote stating that it. had received a further medical •certificate from Miss K. A. Mathew, stating , that she will not be fit to resume duty . until about the end of the svc'md term. , The board expressed regret that, it was necessary to withdraw the services of Mr Kendrick as he was required to ’ take another secondary relieving posi- . tion, and added that. Mr Holst would act as relieving secondary assistant until Miss Mathew is able to return. The board also advised that Miss Cate had been married during the holidays and had accordingly tendered her resignation. Miss "Mona McLean (Wellington) would act as relieving assistant pending the appointment of a permanent. teacher. Miss Eileen (kirsnn (Wellington) would avt as additional relieving assistant in tho meantime. School Ball The secretary submitted n financial statement in connection with the recent school ball, showing that the fun<> tion had resulted in a net profit of £5l Ils sd. The gross takings were approx.mately £7O. Mr Loader: The financial result of the ball is most satisfactory and I wish to congratulate all concerned. Dr. Hay: The general consensu.- of opinion is that it was a better ball than la«t year. The Chairman: Tt was a fine effort and I wish to thank the «<hoo| committee, and the ladies’ committee, and the headmaster and staff, and all others who assisted to make the ball such a success. The following visiting committee was appointed for the ensuing month: Messrs Noble. Jurgens, Sherson. Headmaster’s Report The headmaster's monthly report read as follow: — “The school opened on Monday morning for the second term. L have to report the resignation of Airs Calder (nee Miss Cate), who was married during the holidays. Miss Mathew lias applied for further leave of absence, and Mr Kelly is also absent on sick leave. Misses E. Carson, M. Oyston. AL McLean, and Mr 11. B. Holst joined the staff on Monday morning, i mav state that with the admission of five-year-olds, the increasing roll of the school, and with absence through sickness, the staff has been much unsettled during the past term. The Wanganui Education Board has done everything possible to meet the increased staffing required. Now that the winter is here it is often necessary to take lemons in the sunshine, but we have no seating accommodation outside.
