MOTOR-CYCLIST’S DEATH COLLISION WITH ENGINE [ Per Press Association ] CHRISTCHURCH, Mai 24. Reginald Foster Fainter, aged 27, single, a carpenter, of Darfield, received fatal head injuries when he collided with a train at a crossing in the centre of Rakaia township yesterday afternoon. Fainter, who was riding a motorcycle, was returning from a football match in Rakaia and went through a gap in some trucks. Shunting was being done at the station, and although Painter was travelling very slowly he hit an engine passing on another line of rails. He could not save himself and it is thought his head struck the engine about the firebox. Painter died -10 minutes after the accident. BODY IN RIVER UNKNOWN MAN’S DEATH CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. A man whose name and address are unknown, was found drowned in the River Avon at 8.40 this morning. He was described by the police as being about 50 years of age, -with brown hair turning grey, full face and reddish complexion, 5 feet 7 inches in height, and medium build. A bicycle and cap were found on the bank nearby. STRUCK BY TRAMCAR ELDERLY MAN KILLED [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, May 24. Struck by a tramcar while crossing Eden Terrace on Friday night, an elderly man, John Willis Robinson, of Glenmore, died in Auckland Hospital early this morning. COOK DISAPPEARS INCIDENT ON TRAWLER [ Per Press Association ] AUCKLAND, May 25. When the trawler Janies Cosgrove was in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday evening the ship’s cook, George Leaden, disappeared and has not been seen since. The incident occurred during fine weather when the vessel was about seven miles off Mat-ata, the nearest land. The man was seen sitting on the galley at 6.30 p.m. and shortly afterwards he could not be found. The vessel was searched, fore and aft and then she cruised for 1} hours in the area where she had been when the man was last seen. The search, however, was fruitless, and after it was discontinued the trawler left for Auckland where the man’s disappearance was reported to the Marine Department and the police. The missing cook was an Englishman about 40 years of age, and it is understood he was single. He always made his home on board when the vessel was in port. FATAL INJURIES TAXI DRIVER'S DEATH f Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, May 25. Fatal head injuries were suffered by a taxicab driver, Milton Bernard Keane, aged 49, married, in a motor collision at an intersection in the city this morning. The taxicab was struck at the back on the left side and ovei turned, the driver being thrown out on to the road. Keane was admitted to hospital with internal injuries and died three hours later. As a result of being knocked down by a train at Bunnythorpe just after dark to-night, an elderly farm labourer, George Parr, aged 67, lies in hospital with a fractured leg. His condition is very serious. It is not known why Parr was walking along the line and when the train overtook him he was on a small bridge.
