PANIC ON LAUNCH
SUBMERGED OBJECT STRUCK ALL ON BOARD SAVED MELBOURNE, May 24. A panic occurred tviieu the paddle launch Fairyland struck a submerged object during a heavy fog on the River Yarra last night. About 11U passengers, many of whom were youths and girls, fell, or were thrown into the cold water after the launch had been run ashore. .Some ot the passengers struggled in the wale: for about ten minutes, but all eithei managed lu scramble ashore or were rescued. A hole was torn in the bottom ol the launch, and the water began K use rapidiy, and t»*e pilot immedi ateiy ran the boat on to a sandspil near the shore. The passengers rusher io the shore side of the launch, anc their weight forced the rail benvatl the surface. The panic increased and souk climbed on to the frail roof, which collapsed. Roy Harding, nephew of the pilot rescued four girls who were being car tied downstream by the current. »Sev eral other youths also rescued girls from drowning.
