CORONATION VISIT

SYDNEY'S LORD MAYOR PAYMENT OF EXPENSES OPPOSITION AT MEETING Received Mav 'll, 11.20 p.m. SYDNEY, May 11. Opponents in the City Council to a proposal to send the Lord Mayor to London on a coronation visit, caused a disturbance at the council meeting today, describing the proposals as “outting in at a party to which we are not invited.” The discussion arose when a motion authorising the Lord Mayor, Councillor Wales, to represent the city at the celebrations and referring the proposal to the finance committee to make the necessary arrangements, was under consideration. 4 Aiderman Treadwell said the proposal was reducing the council to the level of State and Federal Parliaments where professional politicians were nothing but mendicants. He had never heard in 25 years a suggestion that the Lord Mayor’s expenses be paid anywhere. Sir Harold Gengoult Smith, the last Lord Mayor, said the motion amounted to a demand for an invitation to visit England. Councillor "Wales pointed out that he had not raised the matter, having already booked his passage in a private capacity. The motion was agreed to by 21 votes to 4.
