GRANDSTAND ON FIRE

INCIDENT IN LEAGUE MATCH Received Mav 10, 7.50 p.m. SYDNEY, May 10. During a League match at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday a fire started in one of the grandstands where 3000 spectators, chiefly men, were seated. The 'c.rowd showed no signs of panic but quietly moved away from ♦he smoke to safety ami wh« n the firemen arrived ironically cheered every action, especially when the chemical extinguisher refused to work. The damage was confined to a small area between the floor of the stand and the ceiling of the liquor bar beneath. The fire was caused apparently by a smouldering cigarette butt.
